Backyard Birds 2024
April 2024 — Cedar waxwings visit the backyard
16 April – A lone cedar waxwing had visited for a few days and stopped to take a drink, but it disappeared the moment a camera was grabbed. Finally, on this day a flock arrived — and photos were taken.
At first we counted five in the holly tree.
One flew over and enjoyed the new spring buds on a tree.
Auto-focus. The camera thinks the most fascinating objects are the branches.
Over the past few days, when a camera was aimed at a cedar waxwing taking a drink, this is what the picture looked like. The bird was very camera-shy.
Meanwhile, the regular visitors — a mourning dove and a robin — had a bath.
In the holly tree, we could count five cedar waxwings.
The special moment arrived — a cedar waxwing flew down to take a drink.
And then the flock flew down.
Cedar waxwing: distinctive red mark on the wing and “dipped in yellow paint” tip of the tail.
They returned to the holly tree and then we were able to make out seven all together.

They haven’t been seen since.
