Backyard Birds 2024

April 2024 — First photographs of visiting crows on the ground in our yard —
and species number 50.

9 April – a mysterious visitor, obscured by the bright sun. The dot of red on the wing and the dab of yellow at the end of the tail: it’s a cedar waxwing, the 50th species photographed in our backyard.

11 April 2024 - Finally caught on camera on the ground in our yard: a crow. (Last photographed in March 2016.) There were three below the big birdfeeder, pecking up the seeds dropped by the house sparrows. They are very jumpy and at the first sign of movement by the photographer they leave the yard.

Leaving our yard, two crows flew out of sight. A third amused itself by chasing a rabbit in the neighbour’s yard.

Once the crow left, the rabbit continued to forage.

A few days later, an amazing thing happened — a flock of cedar waxwings visited our yard — and we were able to photograph them. >
